Dog Health: Protect Your Dog from Pesky Fleas & Ticks

Dog Health Flea and tick season is quickly approaching, and we here at Dog Health News want you to keep your dog free of pests. Fleas and ticks are known to carry dangerous diseases for both your dogs and for humans. Fleas famously spread the Black Plague and deer ticks carry Lyme disease that could affect your dog and humans alike. Just how do you as a dog owner combat these tiny threats? There is a vast array of methods, ranging from medication to home remedies.

Here are some simple ways to fight fleas and ticks so you can take better care of your dog and keep them away from the health issues caused by fleas and ticks.

Dog Health: 5 Methods to Stop Fleas and Ticks

  1. Garlic — It sounds like something your grandmother would tell you, “Just give ‘em some garlic, he’ll be fine!” But the reality is that fleas and ticks don’t like the taste of garlic. Try mixing in some chopped garlic or garlic powder into your dog’s food, or even making special treats for them with garlic in it. They’ll love the taste and you won’t have to hunt for pests that could lower dog health.*
  2. Citrus fruits — Fleas and ticks don’t like citrus either! Squeeze some juice from a lemon, orange, or grapefruit and gently apply it to their fur. Be sure to use only fresh squeezed juice, as some vets say there is a potential danger to your dog’s liver if they come into contact with the rind.
  3. Apple Cider Vinegar — Apple cider vinegar is known to help with health concerns such as arthritis, but it also is great for repellingDog Health

fleas, ticks, and other parasites. Just a little bit (about a teaspoon, varying with the weight of your dog) in your dog’s drinking water is enough to keep your dog safe from harmful pests and boost overall dog health.

  4. Bathing — Does your dog already have fleas or ticks? There’s no substitution for a good bath in this situation. Adult fleas cannot hang on to the skin when submerged in water, they will fall off and die. Bath time is also a perfect time to check your dog for ticks as well. There are special tools out there designed to remove the tick, head and all, with minimum pain to you or your animal. Bathing weekly not only makes your dog smell better, but it’s also a great way to maintain your dog’s health.
  5. Medicine — The first line of defense in dog health should be your vet. Your vet’s office probably has a cabinet full of medication for heartworm, and another one for flea and tick medication. Though sometimes expensive, prescription flea and tick medication may prove to be the only thing that stops some fleas and ticks. We give my dog a dose every few weeks during the summer and we usually have very few problems with fleas and ticks.

NOTE: Consult with your vet before changing your dog’s medication, as it is not always a good suit for all dogs.

*Some studies have suggested that large amounts of garlic can be harmful to your dog. When using garlic as a flea remedy, the best dog health advice is to use small amounts or talk to your vet before you consider adding garlic to your dog’s diet.

Dog HealthWhile disease carrying pests may run rampant outside, your dog doesn’t have to suffer from their harmful effects.
